The Dominican Republic (DR) has a concentrated epidemic, with an estimated one percent  HIV prevalence among adults. There are an estimated 500,000 Haitian diaspora in the DR, with an HIV prevalence of four percent among adults. All new HIV infections are among Haitian migrants and their descendants. In the Dominican Republic, Haitian migrants and their descendants face challenges that can make it difficult to obtain health care, including HIV services, due to stigma, discrimination, and the fear of deportation. Based on the National HIV Care and Treatment Database (FAPPS), it is estimated that 50% of Haitians on antiretroviral therapy (ART) at CDC-supported sites have an interruption in treatment (IIT), compared to 30% of people living with HIV on ART who are not part of this priority population. There are concerns the database may not accurately reflect information in the paper-based clinic records. Thus, ICAP’s work in the DR focuses on supporting data quality assessment (DQA) of IIT and viral load coverage at selected high-volume sites.
