Tiffany Harris, PhD, MS, speaks with Voice of America’s Adam Philips on the challenges the African subcontinent is facing in accessing enough COVID-19 tests, which in turns is affecting the accuracy of their infection statistics.
“In South Africa, which does have a much stronger surveillance system compared to the rest of the continent, we are seeing a larger cases and we have been for some time,” says Harris. “That’s probably also a sign that other countries have undercounts. In neighboring countries, such as Zimbabwe for example, we are seeing a surge in cases and in Zambia as well.”
