Mali

Background

Mali has a population of almost 16 million, 70 percent of whom participate in the agricultural sector and 36 percent of whom live below the poverty line.

Health Care System

Less than six percent of Mali’s Gross Domestic Product is estimated to be spent on health care. The size of the country and the limited number of health facilities severely impacts general access to health services. The average life expectancy in Mali is 53 years.

HIV/AIDS in Mali

There are an estimated 76,000 people in Mali living with HIV and almost 60,000 children have lost a parent due to HIV.

Support for Programmatic Activities

In collaboration with the International Center for Excellence in Research (ICER-Mali) at the University of Bamako, ICAP supports the Ministry of Health’s Coordinating Committee for HIV/AIDS to establish and maintain robust national-level strategic information systems. Specifically ICAP and ICER-Mali are working jointly to build the capacity of the Ministry and other stakeholders in HIV surveillance and strategic information systems—which are essential for informing policy and for program planning.
