Next Generation Internships

ICAP’s Next Generation Program is a multidisciplinary training initiative that provides students with internship and fellowship opportunities focusing on global public health.

Through the Next Generation Program, students engage in the design, implementation, and evaluation of ICAP-supported programs while working side-by-side with global health experts. Students will learn about health care delivery systems in low-resource settings while working on a discrete programmatic project with ICAP team members. The Next Generation interns spend two to six months engaged in the design, implementation and/or evaluation of ICAP-supported programs in Africa, Asia and New York under the mentorship of ICAP staff.

This opportunity is open to students enrolled in one of the following schools at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center:

  • The Mailman School of Public Health
  • The College of Physicians and Surgeons
  • The College of Dental Medicine
  • The School of Nursing

    Application Components

    1 – Complete application form (please see this link to the application form)

    All application components are due by Friday, February 20, 2026, by 11:59pm

    2 – Current resume (no more than two pages)

    3 – Statement of interest  addressing a few key questions:

    • Why are you interested in global public health?
    • What are your goals for this internship experience?
    • What are your career goals?
    • What skills and experiences will you bring to ICAP?

    4 – One letter of recommendation

    All application components should be submitted via the Qualtrics application in the link above. Letters of recommendation can be sent separately and directly from the recommender to icap-nextgen@cumc.columbia.edu or uploaded through Qualtrics. Applicants are responsible for confirming receipt of all materials.

     

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Does ICAP provide financial support to interns? Yes, ICAP provides most students with financial support. Students who travel internationally will receive funding to cover roundtrip airfare, accommodations, and associated costs. The total amount of financial support will be determined based on the location of the internship, length of stay, and other financial support available. Students who complete US-based internships will also receive a stipend depending upon the length of their internship.

    When is the application deadline for the Next Generation Program? All application components are due Friday, February 20, 2026, by 11:59 PM.

    When will I be notified about an interview?
    Only qualified students will be contacted for an interview. Students selected for an interview with the project teams will be notified late-February. 

    When are final notifications about acceptance into the program?
    Final decisions will be made by mid-March. You will receive an offer letter via email if you are accepted into the program.

    When will the internship begin?
    Internship start dates for flexible and based on the student’s availability and project needs. There will be opportunities for students to conduct these internships in Spring, Summer and Fall.

    What is the duration of the internship?
    Internships have a 6-week minimum length. Some internships range from 2-3 months and last up to 6 months for students in the Global Health Track at the Mailman School.
