ICAP’s Jessica Justman, MD, senior technical director, was quoted on Oct 28 by WNYC, about the number of hospitalizations taking place in New York City due to COVID-19. In the spring, at the peak of the pandemic, about one in five people who tested positive for the virus was hospitalized. According to the latest city figures, it’s now closer to around one in ten persons. Dr. Justman said while the number of hospitalizations are surprisingly low the data does not give a clear explanation why. Dr. Justman says:

“My first guess is that people who are vulnerable are being more careful.” She said another reason could be that those who are getting infected are being exposed to lower doses of coronavirus, because they’re wearing masks and social distancing.
