Wafaa El-Sadr, MD, MPH, MPA, global director of ICAP at Columbia University, is quoted in an Aug 6 Healthline article discussing the rise of COVID-19 in Europe after many countries loosened strict population and individual restrictions put in place to halt the spread of the virus in communities. She notes that the observed uptick in cases is of particular concern as Europe heads into winter the winter season because people are more likely to be indoors plus the anticipation of seasonal influenza.

“The reason for this second surge in some [European] countries is either the premature easing of population epidemic control measures or a rapid easing of such restrictions…There are important lessons to be learned from these experiences, including for the United States.”
