In an April 7 article on Spanish outlet Expansión, ICAP deputy director of strategic information María Lahuerta, PhD, MPH, outlines the steps toward returning to normal from COVID-19:
First, we need to exponentially improve and increase case diagnosis. This includes having rapid and accessible antigenic and sensitive antibody tests for everyone, not just those who come to hospitals with symptoms.
Second, we must continue to strengthen the health system, allow it to recover, and ensure sufficient health personnel, adequate personal protective equipment, and sufficient intensive care beds in the event of a new outbreak.
Finally and very importantly, we need a strong epidemiological surveillance system that allows us to immediately detect when and where there are new cases and to be able to contact and isolate contacts to prevent further outbreaks.
