In Lesotho, a high HIV infection rate and poor access to maternity services have led to one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. At 620 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, it is twice the global average.
In this video spotlight, Adeline Chabela, NEPI Nurse Advisor with ICAP in Lesotho, talks about reducing maternal mortality by increasing the number of qualified nurses and midwives serving in rural areas.
ICAP’s Nursing Education Partnership Initiative (NEPI) is a multi-country effort to strengthen the capacity of nursing and midwifery educational institutions and ensure the production of sufficient numbers of well-trained, clinically competent graduates. In Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, and Zambia the NEPI program is working with ministries of health and nursing schools to improve the quality and relevance of teaching and learning so that nurses can play a central role in addressing critical health challenges and achieving national health goals.
