Wafaa El-Sadr, MD, MPH, MPA speaks with 1 News New Zealand about the COVID situation in the US more than a year into the pandemic. “What we’re seeing now in the US, as well as elsewhere around the world, is that, once you are able to get substantial numbers of people vaccinated, what you start seeing is a clear disconnect between the numbers of cases and the numbers of hospitalizations and the numbers of death. And that’s because we have solid evidence that our vaccines are capable of preventing severe illness and severe disability and preventing deaths,” she said. “So we’re moving into a new phase of this pandemic in areas where vaccines are available.”
