An epidemiologist who is board-certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases, Dr. Andrea Howard oversees the design and implementation of ICAP’s clinical, laboratory and training programs for the prevention, care and treatment of HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and other conditions of public health significance, to ensure that they are based on the latest scientific evidence and are consistent with international best practices. Her global impact is predicated on her extensive clinical experience in HIV, TB, and other infectious diseases in an inner-city setting, and she continues to serve as an attending physician in the division of Infectious Diseases at Harlem Hospital.
Dr. Howard’s primary research interests are TB/HIV integration and the HIV care continuum. She has led a number of implementation science studies aimed at improving the delivery of integrated TB and HIV services in sub-Saharan Africa. She is currently leading a study that will assess the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and the impact of COVID-19 among people living with HIV in Kenya.
Leveraging learnings from the treatment of COVID patients in New York, ICAP’s Clinical and Laboratory Unit – under Dr. Howard’s direction – has developed training modules in the clinical management of COVID-19 to help health care workers in other countries rapidly build capacity to manage this global threat. Dr. Howard is also engaged in projects to improve the implementation of infection prevention and control measures and support roll-out of COVID-19 vaccination.
At the Mailman School for Public Health, where she is director of the Global HIV Implementation Science Research Training Fellowship, Dr. Howard is training the next generation of investigators in implementation science to ensure that evidence-based interventions are implemented effectively in real-world settings.
Dr. Howard has an MD from Weill Medical College of Cornell University and an MS in Clinical Research Methods from Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
