U.S. government programs have received attention recently in mainstream mediafor efforts to address shortages in healthcare workers in sub-Saharan Africa by strengthening medical education. ICAP is pleased to be implementing similar programs that aim specifically to increase capacity for nursing and midwifery institutions in Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, and Zambia.

ICAP’s regional nurse advisor, Dr. Lyn Middleton and Dr. Wafaa El-Sadr, ICAPdirector, recently co-authored an article with funding partner HRSA on the Nursing Education Partnership Initiative in this month’s issue of Academic Medicine.

In the article titled, “The Nursing Education Partnership Initiative (NEPI): Innovations in Nursing and Midwifery Education,” the authors detail how NEPI’s strategy for strengthening pre-service education ensures country ownership with collaboration and capacity building laying the foundation for a sustainable response to workforce shortages and learning gaps.
