HPTN 119- Weekly Doxycycline Prophylaxis for Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections among Young African Women.

This study looks at doxycycline, a well-known antibiotic that is commonly used to prevent and treat acne and some sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis, to learn if taking doxycycline either after condomless sex (known as on-demand doxyPEP) or weekly doxycycline can reduce STI rates for adolescent and young adult females in Africa. Study participants will be randomly assigned to receive: 1) on-demand doxyPEP, 2) weekly doxycycline, or 3) standard of care only. All groups will receive standard of care which includes standard STI testing, treatment, and sexual health counseling. All participants will get a mobile health app with simple tools to record health information such as sexual behavior and use of doxycycline. DoxyPEP has been studied in MSM and is recommended for men with incident STIs. Where offered at scale cities have seen an impact on incident syphilis.
