Wafaa El-Sadr, MD, MPH, MPA, global director of ICAP, was quoted in a September 23 article in The New York Times which discusses reported cases of the COVID-19 on the first day of in-person instruction at schools and early childhood centers in New York City. At the time of publication, all education centers reporting cases remained open.

Wafaa El-Sadr, a professor of epidemiology at the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health, said that positive cases were to be expected, given that the virus is still circulating in the city, albeit at a low level. But they underscored how reopening schools was always going to be a balancing act.
