On December 4, 2018, ICAP presented “Knowledge is Power: World AIDS Day at 30” featuring presentations and a panel discussion around the theme of “Know your status” – the official theme for World AIDS Day 2018.
More than 80 people filled Hess Commons at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health’s Allan Rosenfield Building, including staff and students from the Mailman School and around the Columbia University Irving Medical Center campus. The event was also streamed via Facebook Live, which allowed viewers worldwide to react and send questions and comments in real time.
ICAP Global Director Wafaa El-Sadr, MD, MPH, MPA, opened the event with an introduction on the significance of World AIDS Day. Bisrat Abraham, MD, MPH (Director of Clinical Operations & Technical Assistance for the Bureau of HIV/AIDS Prevention & Control at NYC DOHMH) presented on the HIV epidemic in New York City and the United States, and Jessica Justman, MD (Senior Technical Director of ICAP and Principal Investigator of the PHIA Project) gave an overview of the global HIV epidemic and ICAP’s work through the Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (PHIA) Project to study and quantify progress toward epidemic control in 14 countries. Community Advocate Isaac Beckford joined for the panel Q&A that followed the presentations, sharing his perspective on community-based outreach efforts in New York City.
