ICAP

Sandile Buthelezi, MD, former country director for ICAP in South Africa, was appointed Director General for the South Africa Department of Health on May 14, 2020.

He transitioned to his new role from his previous position as CEO of Sanac, the South African National Aids Council, which he held since September 2017.

Dr. Buthelezi was country director for ICAP in South Africa starting in 2010, and he then worked as a senior technical lead for the Department of International Development-funded SARRAH (South Africa’s Revitalised Response to HIV) program.

He trained as a medical doctor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and later served for 10 years as KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial head of strategic health programs.
