Putting Families at the Forefront
The family-focused model pioneered by ICAP serves as a foundation for the design of all of its programs. This approach recognizes that health threats affect not only the individual, but also families and communities. ICAP programs focus on preventing illness, identifying those in need of counseling and testing, expanding access to prevention and clinical services, providing psychosocial and adherence support, and promoting patient empowerment and community engagement. A multidisciplinary framework is embraced as a fundamental necessity for effectively meeting both the health and psychosocial needs of patients and families. Distinctive features of ICAP’s model of care include:
- Co-location of services for adults and children
- Specialized training and mentoring for providers in family-focused care
- Support for diverse teams of providers, including lay counselors and peer educators
- Enhanced linkages among HIV services, and with antenatal care and reproductive health services
- Provision of integrated HIV/tuberculosis (TB), HIV/malaria, and HIV/palliative care services
- Coordination of facility-based and community-based services
